Barossa Klassik was the initiative of David Powell of Torbreck Vintners together with bassoonist Jane Gower to establish a regular classical music presence in the Barossa, in keeping with the Valley’s strong historical and cultural roots. Now Australia’s most famous wine region, the Barossa was settled in the 1840’s by Silesian immigrants and remains very proud of its rich Germanic heritage. As well as its splendid wineries, the area boasts many historical Lutheran churches ideal for the performance of fine chamber music. To complement the region’s position as a premium destination for fine wine and cuisine, Barossa Klassik presents international ensembles of the highest quality and repute.
In January 2010 Torbreck hosted the inaugural season of Barossa Klassik featuring island, in residence for two exclusive concerts in the Torbreck Barrel Hall. With the exclusive sponsorship of Torbreck, island recorded their fourth CD, of quintets of Anton Reicha in the beautiful Gruenberg Church near Moculta, in the Barossa Valley.
